Plzeň – English Embankment

CONTRACT AUTHORITY city of Plzeň
PROJECT 2009
TYPE anonymous open

Plzeň’s English Embankment represents the dividing line between the old medieval town and later development from the 19th and 20th centuries. The design of the complex is based on the context of the existing development and the links established in the competition conditions: 1) The complex is designed as three high-rise buildings enclosing the hierarchy of block development and the panel bank building. 2) The urban design employs diluted development toward Radbuza Embankment. 3) The buildings form a uniform complex of three masses differing in height and layout. 4) The building facing the park is a dominant landmark (33 m) enclosing the space of the park. It is approximately the same height as the ‘skyscraper’ in Americká St. 5) The buildings stand on a base with a uniform height with entrances. The buildings have commercial spaces on the ground floor (restaurants, shops). 6) Public space – courtyards, a square with a linear water element, places for seating and new trees and bushes – is created between the buidlings. 7) The basement of the building offers parking for 350-400 cars.
