Central Bohemia - 'Charred' cottage

INVESTOR private
PROJECT 05/2015

A basement and attic will be added to the existing weekend cottage. The designed structural system combines load-bearing masonry in the basement and wood on the above-ground part of the house with the attic. The cottage is topped with a pitched green roof. The basement features the entrance to the outdoor space. A balcony is added to the above-ground floor through the southern glazed wall, and access to the balcony from the attic is provided on the west side of the cottage. Door and window frames and the doors and construction of the balcony with railings are made from larch with an oil finish. For the facade we utilised a technology that has its roots in Japan but is beginning to be successfully employed here in Europe. The cottage is clad with charred larch siding. Wood treated in this manner is resistant to the elements, insects and fire.
